The Weeknd Donates 1 Million USD to Ethiopia
The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) is pledging 1 million USD to help feed thousands of people in Ethiopia affected by the recent conflict in the region of Tigray. The Ethiopian - Canadian is teaming up with last year's Nobel Peace Prize Winning, the United Nations World Food Programme.
"My heart breaks for my people of Ethiopia as innocent civilians ranging from small children to the elderly are being senselessly murdered and entire villages are being displaced out of fear and destruction. I will be donating $1 million to provide 2 million meals through the United Nations World Food Programme and encourage those who can to please give as well,” he said in a statement read from the pages of WFP.
The Canadian star has been generous when it comes to Ethiopian issues, most recently donating generously to the Ethiopian studies department at the University of Toronto as well as the local Ethiopian Orthodox Church in his hometown. In addition, last year, he donated 300, 0000 USD to the victims of the Lebanese man-made fire disaster that devastated the whole city.
Born to Ethiopian immigrants and raised in the Toronto suburbs of Scarborough, he was scheduled to have wedged a concert in the Addis Ababa last year and involve himself in charitable gestures however it was postponed because of the COVID pandemic.
“We are extremely concerned about the food security situation in Tigray,” World Food Programme USA President & CEO Barron Segar said in the same WFP statement.
WFP is currently one of the most active international agencies playing a major humanitarian role in the recurring conflicts within Ethiopia.
