U.S. stance on Ethiopia’s sovereign right to use Nile yesterday and today
When Ethiopia launched construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) nine years ago, it came as a long awaited and belated action for many Ethiopians who were anxious of using the Nile water and seeing the development of the country.
But, it was taken as a surprise effort of Ethiopia to take advantage of the political insecurity that rocked Egypt at the moment.
A guru of Ethiopian history takes the rivalry back to the 1950’s as he refers to an official letter by the U.S. State Department expressing stance that supports Ethiopia’s sovereign right to use Nile water. Yet, Ethiopia’s endeavor to benefit from its resource was nipped in the bud due to Egyptian rigid stance.
