Cloud of the Novel corona virus will eventually be lifted

Recently, the outbreak caused by the novel coronavirus grabbed international attention. The Chinese government regards the prevention and control of the outbreak as the country's most important and urgent work for now. Chinese President Xi Jinping has made important instructions and deployment many times for the containment and mitigation of the epidemic.

China has built an all-round and multi-level prevention and control system from the central government to the local level. All aspects of work are open and transparent and we are speeding up progress in a scientific and orderly manner. The Chinese government has mobilized a large number of medical teams and supplies to help the hardest-hit Hubei Province. Working groups and steering groups have been sent to different areas of the country to guide the work. In order to cooperate with the fight against the epidemic, the Chinese people carried out ‘self-quarantine’ and spontaneously organized publicity during the lunar New Year.

In just over a week since the outbreak Chinese scientists and virologists experts got the novel coronavirus through patients’ sample and identified the pathogen. So far more than 200 patients have been cured and discharged from hospitals with the spread of the epidemic been brought under control. China has the full determination, confidence and capability to win the battle against the virus with concerted efforts.

At the same time, China has been conducting international cooperation in an open, transparent and responsible manner. We have released information to international organizations like WHO, ACDC (Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) and relevant countries at the earliest time and shared genetic sequence of the virus, facilitating timely and effective response by various parties. Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had telephone conversations with his foreign counterparts, keeping close communication on the situation.

Attaching great importance to the safety of foreign nationals in China, we keep foreign embassies and consulates informed through various channels and work hard to address their difficulties. China's responsible action has won full recognition of WHO and countries around the world. Chairperson of the AUC (African Union Commission) Moussa Faki Mahamat has sent a letter to President Xi Jinping, expressing solidarity with China's fight against the novel coronavirus epidemic on behalf of the AU. The Director of ACDC John Nkengasong highly appraised China's excellent, positive measures to fight the epidemic as well as reporting the number of infected people in a timely and candid manner, so that the international community could know and track the situation in China.

Regarding WHO's declaration of the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern, Director-General Tedros clearly stated that the main reason for this declaration is not because of what is happening in China. It is about protecting countries with weaker health systems and are ill-prepared to deal with potential spread. WHO continues to have confidence in China's capacity to control the outbreak. There is no reason for measures that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade. WHO doesn't recommend limiting trade and movement. Owing to China's resolute and effective anti-epidemic measures the epidemic is occurring mainly in China, with limited spread to other countries, which accounted for only one percent of all the confirmed cases.

Africa and China are closely linked. Our cultural and people-to-people exchanges have also become more frequent especially in recent years. We really need to be vigilant to protect our African friends from the virus. However, we should also remain united and avoid the negative impact of overreaction on normal communication between China and Africa. Chinese Mission to AU is keeping close communication with AU/ACDC and is releasing information timely. Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention will also strengthen cooperation and share professional information with ACDC. I believe that with the joint efforts of China and the international community, especially Africa, the epidemic cloud hanging over our heads will eventually be lifted.
